Crowns are used for several different dental situations. Usually, they’re applied to a tooth that’s been damaged or compromised in some way. If a tooth’s structure is missing due to decay or breakage, or if a tooth is at risk of being further damaged, a crown is an excellent option to protect and preserve it.
At any routine dental checkup, we’ll be able to tell you if your tooth is at risk or in need of a crown.
Precious metal crowns are typically gold. Gold crowns have been shown to outlast other types of crowns. Gold crowns are strong and require no maintenance. Because of their bright appearance, they’re used mainly for back teeth.
Porcelain crowns have an underlying metal framework. The metal is hidden and provides strength for the crown, while the white porcelain provides aesthetic beauty. About fifty percent of crowns are made from durable, reinforced porcelain.
Zirconia crowns provide a clean white porcelain look and are solid all the way through. They’re highly durable and have been growing in popularity, with outstanding and long-lasting results.
The appointment required for a crown preparation is similar to a filling appointment with a couple more steps including the fitting a short term or ‘temporary’ crown. A shorter appointment is required about month later to place the long term crown. As with any dental appointment, if anxiety is a concern we are happy to provide you with a low dose anxiety medication if desired.
